A network is a group of computers and associated peripheral devices connected by a communications medium and capable of sharing files and other resources between several users. Local Area Networks (LANs) use different protocols and access control and encoding techniques. The protocol of one network is not usually compatible with the protocol of another network type. An example being Ethernet and Token Ring; however they may co-exist by interconnection via devices such as Routers and Gateway.
Network Essentials
How is a network established?
A basic network consists of running horizontal cabling from the patch panel (housed in the comms cabinet) to the RJ45 sockets. RJ45 patch leads are used to connect the socket to the PC.
What equipment will be required?
Comms Cabinet/Data Cabinet (either wall mounted or floor standing) - the enclosure for housing patch panels and other equipment, these can vary in size depending on the size of the network.
Patch panel/Distribution panel - an RJ45 outlet panel with IDC termination points at the back, available with either 16, 24, 32 or 48 ports.
RJ45 socket/Data outlet – Connection point from the network to the PC/ Terminal/ Telephone
